I absolutely devoured this book, I ate it right up and i’m never letting it leave my thoughts – by far one of my favourite ever ‘captive’ books, and definitely in my top 5 Mafia reads!
Ghost follows an American girl named Talia, who has been kidnapped and sold to a Bulgarian arms dealer, via the Russian Vory. Her life is so miserable and full of despair, the only thing she looks forward to is the death that she has been planning ever since she arrived at her prison in the basement of her captors home.
Alexei is a top ranking Russian Vor, he is a solitary man, and one who is incapable of trusting anyone. Apart from his closest friends of which there are few, he spends most of his time holding the world at arms length. When the head of the Irish syndicate comes to him for help to find his wife’s best friend, he sets himself on a mission to find the broken woman in the photo, and who he believes will be perfect for his plans.
Swapping one captor for another is terrifying for Talia, but not because her new master treats her badly, but quite the opposite. She cannot afford to have hope.
“I may not ever be able to love you,” I tell her.
“But I can want you. And let there be no doubt, Solnyshko, I am keeping you.”
This book was pretty much perfect in my opinion, I have not one bad word to say about it. It was brutal, gruesome, heartbreaking, emotional, swoony, sexy, and completely authentic. There was nothing gratuitous, nor over the top, it was a fantastically well-written mafia romance that made me feel a multitude of emotions, but most of all it was such a beautiful love story, between two broken people who were perfect for each other.
I could read this all over again, and I am going to shout to everyone that I know, that if you love a dark romance, this is one that you must add to your shelf – it was SO GOOD!
Top marks to Zavarelli.
Ghost is a dark romance, told from dual POV and can be read as a stand-alone novel. Also part of a series following fellow mafia members in both the Irish Syndicate and Russian Vory.
