This was my first novel by author E.M Abel and I was extremely impressed with her ability to tell a story that was so deep and touching and with a unique style that stands out from the rest.
For me this was a story that I could relate to, it was a story of coming of age as a woman, when you come to a point in your life where you realise that you are not living the life that you should be living, and are stuck in one that doesn’t quite fit.
“Derek was not the one I’d been waiting for.
I was just the one he’d chosen.”
Penelope married young, and gave up her dreams of becoming a nurse when she traveled with her military husband, and ten years later she is left wondering if this is as good as it gets. Finding out her husband isn’t the man she initially thought he was is bitter pill to swallow, and she turns to smoking weed and downing booze and xanax to help her to forget, which in turn, leads her to a man called Brandon.
“I knew it was wrong, but I didn’t care about right and wrong.
I wanted retribution. I deserved to throw all my morals aside and live in lust.”
Brandon is a bartender, model, weed dealer and overall pretty boy and whilst that doesn’t sound so great for a potential book boyfriend, there is so much more to him than what first appears and he definitely grew on me as his character developed throughout the book.
What I loved most about this story was the authenticity of it, and the fact that the characters weren’t picture perfect or typical.
Told in the present tense from Penelope’s point of view, we also get flashbacks from when she first met and fell in love with her husband Derek, which really adds to the overall journey that she takes in order to find herself in a place that she finds true happiness, not only with herself but with a man who really understands her, and loves her for who she is.
“It was perfect and peaceful, a love with no expectation an instant without regret.”
A lovely story that was quite poignant at times, but full of hope and empowerment, one I definitely enjoyed reading. I look forward to reading future books by this author.
