Menace (Scarlet Scars #1) by J.M. Darhower REVIEW

nce upon a time, there was a guy who got so fed up with life that he resorted to murder and mayhem just to feel alive.

Lorenzo Gambini is bored. So fucking bored. Most people either annoy him or avoid him, afraid to face him. Figuratively. Literally. With his face partially disfigured, scarred, he looks every bit the monster the stories make him out to be: the notorious menace they call Scar. They say he’s a sociopath. Maybe he’s a psychopath. Whatever path he’s on, people tend to stay far away from it.

Until one day, a young woman bumps right into him–a woman just as fed up with life, but for much different reasons. With a Scarlet Letter inked on her wrist and secrets buried deep in her soul, Morgan Myers is running from something… or maybe somebody. Lorenzo isn’t quite sure.

You can bet your ass he’s going to figure it out, though.

I love a good Anti-Hero and Lorenzo Gambini really fit the bill for me, he makes no apologies, and he’s as badass as they come. As you learn all about the person that he is, and how he became the man he is today, you cannot help but feel invested in this story, rooting for him to do the right thing and be the man he needs to be for our heroine, Morgan. It took me a while to get into this story but once I did, I was in deep – the plot was absolutely fantastic, and I cannot wait to read the second part to this duet to find out the conclusion to what is a suspensful and captivating read.

Darhower took me on a journey, one that has many layers, and that builds up to a complex but highly addictive storyline that has many twists and turns that I did not see coming. Our heroine is an extremely sassy and strong female, and Lorenzo has definitely met his match with her. She is scared of only one thing in life, and that surprisingly does not include the man who instils fear in many others, with his brutality and lack of emotion that has grown men running in the other direction.

“Once upon a time, there was a woman— a woman with a gorgeous little body and a mouth made of sin. The only thing sweeter than this woman’s pussy was the thirst she had inside of her, a thirst for fucking and fighting, for tempting fate”

As I said previously, it took me a while to get fully immersed into the book, but well worth all of the backstory, as I ended up enjoying it immensely. Another winner from one of my favourite mafia romance authors.

Menace is a romantic suspense, and is part 1 of a 2 part series, told from dual POV. Grievous is the continuation.
